Overview

On average there are roughly 1,300 take-offs and landings every day at Heathrow, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. So it comes as no surprise that complex construction projects help the airport run smoothly. In fact, the construction of Terminals 2 and 5, were some of Europe’s largest and most complex construction projects to date! In this virtual work experience programme, we’re taking a look behind the scenes to see the thought and scale behind these projects.

What's included

You’ll learn about modern construction methods, how to be more sustainable and the gateway cycle. You’ll take part in fun quizzes and thought provoking activities, like managing a challenging project, we’ll also encourage you to do your own research into what roles interest you most in the construction sector.

An Introduction to Heathrow

In this introductory module, we’ll hear all about Heathrow’s story, including its history, what it does now and what it wants to look like in the future. We’ll cover topics such as diversity and inclusion, sustainability and tackling Covid-19.

Industry Introduction

Professionals working in construction are involved in the physical construction of a building, while others are responsible for designing, planning, and managing a project. So what does construction look like at Heathrow? Well, in this module we’ll find out!

Construction projects

In this module, we’re going to take you through the entire construction process at Heathrow, from contracting (winning a project) to project close down and all the gateways in-between!

Project management and quantity surveying

Project management is typically defined as managing resources throughout a project to ensure the project is completed on time and on budget, but what does this look like? In this module, we’re going to meet a Quantity Surveyor, who will explain how they get their job done.

Employability

Finally, this employability module will equip you with all the essential skills needed as you enter the world of work - think all things teamwork and leadership. You’ll also be given advice on how to perfect your CV to ensure your engineering career has a smooth takeoff.

When will I hear back if I have been successful with my application?

Once you have applied for your programme, you will receive a confirmation email. You will be notified about the outcome of your application via email at least 3 days before the programme start date. Good luck!

Can I apply to multiple programmes?

Yes, you can sign up to multiple programmes with us. The live talks will be available as recordings, so you can catch up on any potential clashes.

Who can take part in the programme?

Most of our programmes require students to be in school/college. Some programmes require students to be based in specific regions of the UK, this is stipulated by the organisations themselves, and is not defined by Springpod.

However, the ages mentioned on our programmes are more of a guideline than a strict limit. As such, we more than welcome older students to apply as well!

Will I receive a certificate on completion of the programme?

You will receive a certificate on completion of your programme. It will be made available to download whenever your programme is marked as complete.
